Fair Oak Barfoot Cup Rd 2: 140 for 6

Match Report

True to form Longparish lost the toss and were asked to field; a tough test for Longparish’s successful U13 side against an A division Fairoak side featuring several boys who have represented the County at some point over the last three years.

Brad Aldridge picked up the first wicket in the third over with the score on 10. Fairoak skipper Jake Salmon and Rob Thrussel put on 75 for the second wicket from ten overs as Longparish were put under pressure in the field. Thrussel retiring on 30, Salmon athletically run out by Brad Aldridge. Fairoak’s Nick Bass added a quick 27 as his side maintained a scoring rate of 7 an over to finish on 140.

A daunting target for Longparish to chase, openers Alex Coetzee and William de Cani starting slowly to reach 33 in the ninth over, before Coetzee was superbly caught for 8. Enter Aldridge to strike 18 from an over from a highly rated County bowler to get Longparish back on track, de Cani joining in from the other end to retire on 30, Aldridge retiring a couple of balls later on 31.

With thirty now required from 5 overs Longparish had a sniff of victory, Michael Taplin kept the reply on the rate with an eye catching 23, as wickets continued to tumble at the other end. Charles Sherwood was run out without facing, Dan Pomroy and William Jackman bowled by balls they would normally have blocked had not the need for quick runs been so great. Michael Taplin fell to a freak dismissal, driving the ball straight down the ground for a certain boundary, the ball hitting his batting partner Dan Paice and looping in the air to be caught at mid on.  Dan Paice hit a huge four before being caught on the boundary, Nick Bearpark and Oliver Coetzee running and running in their efforts to overcome the Fairoak total as  Longparish eventually finished four runs short of the Fairoak total.  A superb performance by Longparish against a very good U13 side; every one of the eleven making a contribution with bat or ball during the match that caps a highly impressive and enjoyable season for Longparish under 13s
